Fire Fighters For Healing
The first-of-its-kind emergency housing support for burn survivors and families
opened in downtown Minneapolis in January of 2023.

The Situation
When a child or adult has sustained burn trauma, the family is forced into weeks or months of unique challenges. The Firefighters For Healing Transitional Healing Center will provide 24/7 relief for families by providing emergency housing and access to a network of support, says Firefighters For Healing Founder & Executive Director Jake LaFerriere.
The Finished Joy Room
After a design consult with Joy Collaborative, it was determined that a quiet, kids-specific space was needed in their new ground-breaking facility. Originally planned as a nurse’s charting station, this small space was chosen for its adjacency to the common kitchen and a great view to an outdoor patio.
The Firefighter’s for Healing Joy Room introduces Camp RED (“Realize Every Dream”), their annual summer camp. Nordic design touches balance a robust industrial frame surrounding a helmeted donation, representative of the heroes who make Camp RED possible.
The crowning feature of the space is a view into a Minnesota tree canopy reminiscent of hammock time. The feature becomes a soothing night light in a space designated as a needle-free zone.

About Burn Trauma
Patients who have survived burn trauma have unique challenges and often a very lengthy recovery. Their families are often displaced for weeks, if not months. When any firefighter from Minnesota, Wisconsin or the Dakotas is sidelined by a line of duty injury or a medical diagnosis like cancer, heart issues or PTSD, we are here to provide relief and support. "Firefighters For Healing works with community partners to meet the physical, emotional and financial needs of patients and their families,” said Founder Jake LaFerriere. “We show up with compassion, understanding and the ability to take action."
